macbook air 13 hdmi connection to sony tv

I have a 2014 Macbook Air 13 running El Capitan 10.11.6. I am trying to connect it to my Sony Bravia TV (KDL-40Ex503) using a non-apple MDP to HDMI converter and then connecting the HDMI cable I use for the PS4 into that converter. The screen image displays but constantly (every few seconds) tries to rescale/resize and blacks out and then displays again. I have tried all the usual stuff - fiddling with display setting in system preferences, restarting with cable in and out, mirroring screen and not, changing resolutions, etc - but all to no avail. It works absolutely fine connecting to an ASUS monitor - so my thinking is that the convertor connection is fine. Maybe the TV is the problem - I have tried with my son's standard cheap Compaq laptop using the same HDMI cable into TV and that works no problem. So my conclusion is that the issue is with the Mac. Any thoughts or help much appreciated
