airplay forces downloaded movie to play on wifi...

Preface: I have terrible WiFi at home, good for Netflix and such but terrible for HD streaming. So for the purposes of watching a purchased movie on iTunes without having to wait 4 hours I will download the movie at my work. My issues is that to airplay with my Apple TV and macbook I have to have both connected to the WiFi. Now I have the movie downloaded on my computer, if I turn off the WiFi, movie plays automatically, but on my MacBook, not on my tv through airplay. So WiFi turned on, airplay works great but now my downloaded movie wants to stream through the WiFi instead of just playing the downloaded copy. This is a flawed system. Surely I can bypass this somehow, without having to by a HDMI connector for my laptop??
