Backing up a photo library too big for local SSD

I have an iCloud photo library that is in excess of 250GB. I'm currently optimizing photo storage on all of my devices to save disk space. This is the option I prefer. In fact, if I change Photos settings to Store Originals instead, there isn't enough space to store the entire library on my Mac. I'd like to backup my entire library to an external drive, preferably with my scheduled time machine backups to keep a local copy while still keeping the optimize option. Possible?

Thanks

Hi sg214,

You can move your Photos Library to an external drive by following these steps. Note your Photos Library would not be included in your Time Machine backup using this method.

Back up your Mac

https://support.apple.com/mac-backup

Quit Photos application

Select the Photos window and from the Photos menu bar, select Photos > Quit Photos.

Copy Photos Library to external drive

Open the Finder application. From the Finder menu bar, select Go > Home > Pictures. Highlight Photos Library, control click, and copy. Navigate to your external drive and paste.

Verify Photos Library is accessible from external drive

Select the Photos icon from your dock while holding the Option key. Select Other Library > [External Drive] > Photos Library.

Download Originals

From the Photos menu bar, select Photos > Preferences > iCloud. Ensure iCloud Photo Library is checked with Download Originals to this Mac selected.

Delete Photos Library from Mac

Open the Finder application. From the Finder menu bar, select Go > Home > Pictures. Highlight Photos Library, control click, and move to trash. Control click on trash and empty trash.

All the best.
