Cannot change default browser on OS X Sierra

Hi!

I and some of my colleagues have the following problem. After upgrading to Sierra some weeks ago, we are no more able to change the default browser. The OS does the following:

  • If a browser - e.g. Chrome - asks to become the default browser and I click "yes", it has no effect
  • When trying to change the default browser in the OS Settings, the following happens:
    • Drop-Down shows all installer browsers, current default is selected
    • When I change to a different browser (e.g. Chrome), the drop-down immediately switches back to the previous default.

The problem does not seem to depend on the browser:

  • Originally, the issue was with Firefox being the default browser, i.e. I could no more change to a browser different than Firefox.
  • After uninstalling Firefox, the default browser was Safari, which I could not change to Chrome.
  • After reinstalling Firefox again, the default browser now sticks to Firefox again.

OS Version: Sierra 10.12.1 (16B2555)

Browser versions:

  • Safari: 10.0.1 (12602.2.14.0.7)
  • Firefox: 49.0.2
  • Chrome: 54.0.2840.71 (64-bit)

Thank you for any hints!

Marc

In the OS settings(System Preferences->General), try holding the Control key when clicking on the default browser dropdown.  On a whim, having just learned that Control-click was a *thing*(I'm new to Mac), I gave it a shot and it happened to work.

This happened to me and eventually I found a set of pop-up windows asking me if I really wanted to change from Safari to another browser. They were hiding behind the system preferences window and I didn't see them. Once I closed the system preferences window and clicked on them (all of them), default browser seems to have changed successfully. Seems to be a "feature" with the windows popping up behind instead of in front where you can see them.

All of which suggests, after you click the browser you want in system preferences, spread out all the windows to find the hidden pop-up window and confirm there.

I encountered the same problem when upgrading to Mac Sierra. In my case "EpiChrome" caused the browser stickiness issues. Once I upgraded to version 2.1.18 (and restarted all my apps based on epichrome.app + accepted the upgrade), which explicitly fixes this problem, I was fine again.

I tried changing it and looking behind all open windows and I had no hidden message bar, so I tried checking for software updates and there was nothing, and then I tried control+click and that worked!

There is an easy fix. All you have to do is select your Chrome browser as the default browser 7 times and then it will stick as your default browser. If you want to switch back to Safari browser, you have to select Safari as your default browser 7 times and then it will stick as your default browser. Thanks!
