No sound thru earbuds for podcasts

I have a 7th generation iPod nano, which I bought new 6 weeks ago. Up until today it was working fine.

Today when I play podcasts, no sounds come through the earbuds. Sound is fine for playing music through earbuds.

Sounds is fine for both music and podcasts when broadcasting through a paired bluetooth speaker.

I tried power cycling, and a complete factory reset. Still have the problem. Well not exactly. I cycled through a bunch of the podcasts and one plays through earbuds, but most don't.

Any ideas on what to try?

It was the earbuds. Very strange. Must be more to them than I realize. One podcast would play, but distorted. No sound from any of the others. Then I started going through some music files, and some were fine, but others played just the instrument tracks normally, but the vocal track was very faint.

I have owned iPods for many many years and have gone through countless pairs of earbuds. Never have come across this problem before.
