Checking iCloud settings, noticed desktop files/folder not stored on iCloud.

I check box to have them stored on iCloud.

When I leave iCloud, my desktop has been wiped clean - no files/folders.

A minute or two later, the desktop is filled with files/folder that were on my computer 6 to 12 months ago.

How do I get my most recent set of files/folders back on my desktop?

I found an archived iCloud file that contains a folder with my most recent files/folders.

I could trash every file folder on my desktop, and then drag my most recent files/folders. Is that the best thing to do?
