A few questions about my new Macbook Pro 2017 m...

Hi,

I have been using a MacBook Pro 2012 for years and FINALLY upgraded to a MacBook Pro 2017 (15"). I have a few silly questions that I think I know the answer to but want to be sure.

1. I've already pretty much determined that there is no way my old Apple Cinema 20" display (A1018) will work with my new MacBook Pro, correct? It worked great with my 2012 MacBook Pro, but I am guessing it's too outdated for the new 2017 MacBook.

2. I had added a second hard drive to my 2012 so as to have more storage space. Is this option possible with the new MacBook Pro 2017, or should I just get a large external hard drive? I want to use it for extra storage and Time Machine backup.

3, Finally, what multi adaptor port do you recommend most for the newest MacBook Pro? I will probably need USB, Thunderbolt, etc.

Thanks!

Hi mm!

I think I am in a similar situation as I have had a 2009 MBP until last year when I purchased the 2016 MBP model (15" as well).

I am going to try to help you at my best:

1) I am not sure which connection your 20" Apple Cinema Display needs but, if it is anything like Display Port, HDMI or DVI or VGA, you can easily find an adaptor on the Apple Store (every accessory is available here Power & Cables - Mac Accessories - Apple

2) I have purchased the 500GB option and am currently using this drive LaCie 2TB P’9227 Porsche Design USB-C Mobile hard drive - Apple partitioned into 1.5TB for extra storage and 0.5TB for Time Machine. It works wonderfully, very silent, light and pretty fast!

3) The adaptors you need may rotate around what are your current peripherals. At the link above (accessories) you can find a lot of options but if you feel like specifying your need I will try to help you choosing the best options.

Let me know

Thanks

B.

Thanks, B! I am still confused re: the monitor, though... when I chatted with Apple today the guy said that NO, my monitor would not work anymore with the new 2017 MacBook Pro because my monitor is too old/obsolete (not sure how old it is but it still works fine and the instruction book has the date "2007" on it).

I feel like it should work but so far the USB-C to mini displayport adaptor I bought did not work (I tried plugging this into the mini displayport to dvi adapter I bought years ago to connect the monitor to my MacBook Pro 2012). Any suggestions?

Which cable does your monitor exactly need to transfer image data?

I mean ... if you had no need for adapters, which cable would you use?
