Left Command+C Shortcut Stops Working

As the title says, my left Command+C shortcut stops working pretty much within minutes of starting (or restarting) my MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.3. The right Command button continues to work just fine I read a few other posts where people are having a similar issue, but most seem to get resolved by booting in Safe Mode, though unfortunately for myself, that isn't the case as I get the same results. Restarting seems to fix it initially, but sometimes it's not working from the very first test.

My first thought was that the key on my MBP (brand new like two days ago) was bad, but it continues to work for everything BUT copying. I can paste, create tabs, and anything else I normally do, but no luck on copying. Likewise, the C key continues to work as expected, so it's just the left Command key that has the problem. Any thoughts?

Hello jacobcdietz,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that the Command key on the left side of your keyboard isn't working. I'm happy to assist you with this.

Since booting into safe mode gives you the same result, let's try to test this issue in another user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

If you have the same issue after that, try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC): Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac.

Reset the SMC on Mac notebook computers

First, determine whether the battery is removable. Mac notebook computers that have a nonremovable battery include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, MacBook (Late 2009), and MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) and later. Learn more about Mac notebook batteries.

If the battery is nonremovable:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Unplug the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter from your computer.
  3. Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds.
If you have a 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.
  4. Release all keys.
  5. Reconnect the power adapter.
  6. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

If the battery is removable:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from your computer.
  3. Remove the battery. (Learn about removing the battery in MacBook and MacBook Pro computers.)
  4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
  6. Press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Let me know if this helps, or if you have any questions.

Best Regards.

I have the same problem, and after trying your suggestions, the problem continues.

Other solutions out there?

Will it work in the Safe Mode?

Safe Mode - About El Capitan    also Sierra

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan.          also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
