Apple watch 3 BPM not continuous

I bought the Apple Watch 3 last week.

I have had other non-apple fitness trackers for years and am confused at how the Apple watch 3 works.

If I randomly look at my BPM (a widget on my clockface) during the day it will always tell me, for example:

Heart Rate

69 BPM

Or, if I am exercising my arms with dumbbells and select (Other - Strength Training), the apple watch won't even bother and won't track my BPM until after the exercise is done.

With other fitness trackers, it is tracked all the time.

The watch is not loose. Both my arm and watch are clean.

So, is this by design or broken?

I have a feeling the watch is broken because if the watch notifies me of elevated heart rate 5 minutes later...I may be already dead.

Hi

Apple advises that, even under ideal conditions, Apple Watch may not be able to record a reliable heart rate reading every time for everybody.

For the best performance from the heart rate sensor during workouts, ensure that you wear your watch snugly (but not too tightly) on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening the band before starting a workout and loosening it again afterwards.

The sensor is likely to give better results for workouts that involve rhythmic (eg running) rather than irregular (eg boxing) movements. Other issues that can impact sensor performance include skin perfusion and wrist tattoos:

For any workouts that involve flexing your wrists (such as when lifting weights, for example), it may help to move your watch a little higher up your arm, away from the flexing joint.

You have advised that you have already tried cleaning the back of your Apple Watch:

If you continue to experience issues with recording your heart rate during workouts, then, for more consistent readings, you may wish to consider pairing an external heart rate monitor / Bluetooth chest strap to your Apple Watch:

If you are concerned about a possible hardware defect with your Apple Watch, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

Ok. I have read all those articles and

"Apple advises that, even under ideal conditions, Apple Watch may not be able to record a reliable heart rate reading every time for everybody."

Just to understand this correctly, other people can have reliable heart rates but for some reason, I cannot.

Because I am just sitting here typing at my desk and my watch is saying that it hasn't looked at my BPM in 7 minutes unless I ask it to do a secondary scan by going to the Heart Rate app.

And even if I do that, when my watch screen turns off, it seems to stop scanning my heart rate.

This cannot be just me, unless my watch is broken
