How do I reset an iPod whose passcode has been ...

My daughter has an iPod Touch 5. She reset the passcode to access the device and promptly forgot it. I am trying to reset and erase the device so we can use it, but nothing is working. When I do a hard reset it doesn't give me the option to restore, it still just says its disabled. When I plug it into the computer we synced it to, it says I have to unlock the iPod to give permission to access the device, but if I could unlock it, I wouldn't have this problem. I can't even view the device in the list in iTunes; because I can't unlock it, the computer won't recognize it at all. What do we do?

Answered! The hard reset requires you to continue to press the buttons for at least 60 seconds, which I was not doing.
