I recently bought a MacBook Pro 2017 and I'm new to the Mac World, so I'm just wondering if I need to have some type of protection for my MacBook.

Yes, you do need some protection, which is why Apple has already included everything you need:

macOS - Security - Apple

What you do NOT need is a third-party so-called Virus scanner that makes a Big Show of scanning each and every file your Mac encounters, looking for PC viruses. These will all make your Mac slow and often unstable.
