I have owned 7 Apple products, and I will avoid...

Dear Apple,

I have been a faithful Apple user, having owned iphone 6, ipad pro, 2015 Macbook Pro, Apple watch gen 1, powerbeats wireless earphones, beats wireless headphone, and a newly bought Macbook Pro 2017 with touch bar (bought on Jul 25, 2017). And I bought the apple care protection plan for everything that can come with the plan including my new macbook pro.

My newly bought macbook pro got damaged by rain on Aug 25 2017, and I contacted Apple support. They first asked for roughly 70CAD for a diagnosis test and then told me 2 days later that I just need to buy a new machine because the damage is too great. I can't believe they can do this to a loyal customer whose newly bought ~3200CAD machine with protection plan got broken within one month of purchase. I asked for a small discount to buy another ~3200CAD macbook pro, and the customer service representative straight out refused, no store credit, no care for me as a loyal unfortunate customer, no nothing, screw me.

I understand Apple is a big company and needs to follow rules, but the way it treats me makes me not wanting to spend more money on this company anymore. So now I am typing this post on my new Surface Pro 2017; I just upgraded to a new Samsung S8 instead of waiting for the new iphone; and I bought myself a Garmin 5s watch instead of upgrading to a new Apple watch.

I really hope Apple can learn to treat its customers better in the future, until then I will never choose Apple over the other brands again unless I absolutely need Apple's machines for work or something like that. I still like the simple design of Apple machines, just not the brand anymore.

Yours,

J

You could have taken your MacBook to an authorized service center. They might have been more willing to work on it piece by piece. You also could have (I guess still can) to sell it for parts.

If you believe Samsung and Microsoft will replace their products after you water-damage them, I think you’ll be greatly disappointed.

BTW, this is a user-to-user help forum. Apple isn’t here.

I have taken the Macbook Pro to an Apple authorized service center whose contact info I got from calling Apple helpline and they charged me $70 for the diagnosis, and both of the paid versions of Microsoft Protection Plan and Samsung Protection Plan cover for accidental damage and water damage, FYI. I bought the paid version for Apple Protection as well.

Your computer did not "break" as you stated. You allowed it to get water damaged. I wish you luck in the future with your none Apple products.

Because of the kind of problem you complained about above, Apple has changed its policy for FUTURE purchases of notebook computers.

AppleCare protection plan, with NO coverage for accidental damage, has been replaced by AppleCare+. [This is one of the only good things ported over from the iPhone.] You can have up to two incidents of accidental damage, such as a shattered screen, repaired by paying a non-trivial co-pay.

You must sign up within two months (they used to give you up to a year).

Current AppleCare+ also covers accidental damage.

AppleCare - Mac - Apple

That's a good point, there are some limitations. There is subtlety to that coverage, and it would be prudent for any Buyer to read and understand the full terms and conditions before proceeding.

In the US, It clearly covers simple cracked screen at tier 1, but probably not "run over by forklift".

It seems to cover simple liquid spills under tier 2 (with higher co-pay) but as you suggested, not catastrophic damage.
