Importing ics

Hi,

after updating to Sierra 10.12.(3?) I have problems in importing ics files to the Calendar app.

I remember when doing this before Calendar.app usually asked where to import the calendar items to: new calendar or existing calendar. This dialog is missing, instead the Calendar app doesn't import any item at all.

When dragging & dropping an ics file from desktop to the Calendar app the calendar items will be imported.

Tested and proved on my iMac Retina and my MacBook Air.

Could anyone prove or falsify that?

Thanks in advance
Wolfgang

I do get the pop up asking for which calendar to add the event to when double clicking the ics file on 10.12.3

Are you sure there's nothing wrong with calendar app or your ics file?

Good hint - I exported an empty calender to an ics file an tried to import it again and then I got the pop up. Seems to be something wrong with my other ics files.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Wolfgang! I have exactly the same behaviour as you do with exported ics files, and I don´t think there´s anything wrong here! To be clear, say you have a calendar called “Medical” in Calendar and then export this to your desktop, for example. Double clicking on this ics file will import it, without any pop-up dialog, back to your existing calendar “Medical”…even changing the name of the ics file makes no difference at all, it seems the data is recognised instantly by Calendar.

But let´s say you´ve exported “Medical” and then deleted “Medical” from the Calendar app. Double clicking on the now “orphaned” ics file will bring up the pop-up dialog asking you where to import to!

This seems to be the normal behaviour of Calendar in macOS Sierra as far as I can see, and I´ve just tried it out! I hope this helps clarify the issue for you. I really don´t think there´s anything to worry about! Cheers, Ian.

Which becomes a problem if you'd like to move your data from one provider to another. Let's say you usually store your data at iCloud and like to move them to T-Online. You creat new calendars for the provider T-Online, connect them via WebDAV to the Calendar app, export your calendar from iCloud and want to import it to T-Online. What happens here if you chose the way through the menu "import" the exported iCloud calendar will be re-imported to iCloud. But I wanted to import it to the new and empty T-Online calendar but the app didn't ask me. The only way was to drag the ics file from the desktop to the new calendar. And that's not the kind of behaviour as I remember one or two months ago...

Nevertheless thanks for your answer.

You´re welcome! I see what you mean. I assume you´re talking about the German Telekom magenta cloud service, and if so I can´t offer any help here because I don´t use it, even though they´ve given me 25 GB free storage! Although I use iCloud I don´t (for various reasons) have my Calendar app synchronised with iCloud, and as I only use iCloud I´ve no experience of transferring data from one service to another. Hopefully a more knowledgeable forum user can help you, but you seem to have at least found a way of doing what you want, albeit maybe not an ideal way! Ian.

T-Online was just an example for any other CalDAV provider. If someone else could proof what i worte above: Just add 2 CalDAV accounts to calendar app and try to import - you won't be able to decide where to import to...

Hi Wolfgang, I noticed the same behavior you mentioned (which upon googling a solve is how I ended up here).  I exported a calendar called "Training" from one account and went to import it into a new providers account also called "Training" but Mac OS Calendar just imported it back into the previous account without asking me.  THANK YOU for the tip on dragging the ICS file from my desktop to the correct calendar in the sidebar, you're a live saver.
