Tagging files on a network

Are tags visible to everyone on the network, or just the user who created the tag?  For instance, I'd like to tag a folder I'm working in, but everyone else on the network probably doesn't want to see what I've tagged.

The tag is a document style attribute placed upon a Mac file by the Finder. Only other Mac users can see the tag (or label if using Mountain Lion or earlier). The tag may be stripped from the document when using certain third-party file sharing services that do not preserve Apple extended attributes.
