Failed update, failed usual boot

I have a MacBook Air(probably early 2015 or early 2016). It had OS X El Capitan. I tried to upgrade it to Sierra. After downloading the upgrade through App Store, I clicked on 'install'. After some time, I was asked to restart. I clicked on restart. Upon restarting, OS upgradatation was taking place. It stopped somewhere in the middle because of lack of storage space.

I ended up with this screen titled 'macOS Utilities'. [image 1]

Then, I clicked on the option to reinstall macOS, it did go on for some time but seemed to have stuck somewhere. The log showed some errors, the progress bar had stopped advancing.

I went back to the page with macOS Utilities, and clicked on Disk Utility. [images 2 - 4] It can be seen that the storage of 'Macintosh HD' is full. I am not able to open 'Finder' to delete some files, empty up storage a bit, and then continue with re-installation. How do I get back to the usual desktop and continue my work? Going back to El Capitan is acceptable. I would prefer being able to save my storage, but if need be, I am ready ro format it.

Hi,

On any of your attempts, did you give it plenty of time to complete the upgrade, at least 60-90 minutes?

Go to Disk Utility > select your HD > click on First Aid > let it finish > click on Details and note what it says toward the end.
