Problems opening laptop pro early 2011 after Si...

A few weeks ago I updated to Sierra 10.12.6.  Since then, upon startup, I get a message on the sign in page that I must press a button to unlock the screen.  The choices are restart, sleep, or shut down. So I usually restart or sleep. Then I type in my name and password and enter. Instead of opening to my desktop, the computer goes goes black for a few moments and then back to the "press a button to unlock the screen" routine and I have to do it again. Then the desktop comes up.  So I have to do this twice everytime I open my computer from off or sleep.  It is a real pain in the neck since it wastes so much time.  Does anyone have a solution? Please bear in mind when answering: I'm not very knowledgeable in computer lingo. Thank you.
