contacts missing on Mac, not iPhone
Hi,
Today when I open Contacts there are "No Cards." There should be many hundreds, as when I last opened the application a couple weeks ago.
Note, I am signed in to iCloud and "Contacts" is checked.
All contacts on my iPhone are still there.
May be irrelevant, but I just had my MBPro (15" late 2011, running 10.12.5) in for a replacement keyboard.
Everything else on the computer seems to be intact.
Thanks for any help.
You are welcome. Is the problem fixed yet?
What do you see at iCloud.com/Contacts?
Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then recheck syncing.
Last resort - have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?
Thank you for this reply.
In iCloud.com, all contacts are present.
I signed out and back in and restarted the MBPro.
Still, "No Cards" in Contacts.
Maybe a plist somewhere?
You are welcome. Are all other applications syncing with iCloud working?
Did you try uncheck the box in System Preferences, waiting a couple of minutes, and then rechecking it?
Yep, did that. No luck.
And it gets more strange: in iCloud I exported all 700 contacts to a .vcf card. Then in Contacts, I imported the card...and nothing happened.
I think Contacts, or an associated file, must be corrupted.
Might be a corrupt .plist.
Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
I did as described; still "No Cards."
This is not the only strange behavior of my late-2011 15" MBPro and I am starting to wonder if the hard drive is corrupted, or if I need a clean reinstall.
Before trying a full reinstall, try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

Please click on the MacOS 10.12.6 Combo link. For unknown reasons, this site inserts the link below it, which isn't the correct link.
OK, you've been very helpful.
This 68-year old retired physician, who has used Macs exclusively since 1985, thanks you.
You are welcome. Is the problem fixed yet?
The problem is fixed. However, I used a sledge-hammer to fix it:
Because the MBP was behaving oddly in many ways and very very slow, I backed up all documents, music, pictures, contacts and bookmarks; made an El Capitan Install disk on a thumb drive; wiped the MBP HD and checked for bad blocks using TechTool (none); installed and updated El Capitan; restored documents, music, photos (a little glitch there) and key software. Contacts were automatically synced from iCloud.
All is well now. The MBP runs like new, very fast, and so far I don't miss any Sierra features.
I can always re-upgrade later.
Thanks again!!
You are welcome.
