highlight
In the gif above, I attempt to replace "Talk to Rick" with "Talk". "Ta" comes out backwards, and then "lk" is inserted normally, but before the first two characters. This is basically system wide, it happens in chrome browser, textEdit, sublime text, intelliJ, etc.
Steps to reproduce:
·3-finger swipe to highlight a section of text
·type more text to replace highlighted section
Expected highlighted text to be replaced with what I typed, in order, left to right.
Instead, the cursor appears to be stuck at a character index position and spits characters out in front of it rather than behind. My text comes out in reverse order (right to left) for a moment until the cursor corrects itself.

To confirm a system wide problem, set up a test account to see if you can duplicate the problem. Was this already done?

Post about it in El Capitan forums. Also, you should consider updating to OS 10.11.5. You are 5 upgrades behind.
Will request the HOST to move this (MBP) posting to Yosemite forum.
Try the above and if the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Ever solve this issue? I'm experiencing the same problem.
Same issue here. I'm on macOS Sierra 10.12.3, but I had quite the same problem for weeks and months, also with previous versions of macOS. Subtle differences: it happens in Chrome and Safari Internet pages (Google search box, pastebin text zone, but not in the URL bar for example), and not in the macOS environment itself (e.g. TextEdit, Notes, Messages) and not in the software structure itself like I said (e.g. not in Chrome or Safari URL bar). Maybe it has to do with the Internet structure pages (like HTML or something like that)?
Same happens for me in Chrome. It is really-really annoying.
Most apps doesn't have this issue. I noticed that Safari have similar behaviour, but instead it just overwrites one letter, e.g. when you type "test" it will be letter "t", then just "e", then"s", then "t". I mean the result of typing will be the only letter in input field.
I would love if someone was able to find a resolution for this, and is willing to share. As of 6/1/17, I'm using Mac OS 10.12.5 and the latest version of Chrome. I use Gmail for work, where I notice this issue most frequently and the behavior occurs in both Chrome and Safari.
I'll add that if I highlight text left to right there is no issue. Furthermore, if I highlight text right to left and pause for a couple seconds it overwrites the text correctly vs what is illustrated in the gif above. So it only happens when highlighting text (right to left) then immediately begin typing to overwrite it. Surprisingly this behavior impacts my gmail composition many times per day.
+1, noticing in Chrome, especially in the ebay search-terms field. Been trying to find a solution for a while now. Behavior exactly as displayed in the gif.
My macbook (yosemite 10.10.5) does the same thing, but as far as I can tell, only in Chrome, and not in all text boxes on chrome. For the one I'm using now works as expected, but if I'm drafting an email in gmail it does exactly what is shown above. Some variations:
1. As far as I've noticed, this happens only in chrome, and not in all text boxes in chrome. For example, when I'm composing an email in gmail, it happens, but it isn't happening in the text box I'm typing this comment in right now.
1. Typing to replace highlighted text as normal when using gmail in Safari, but safari is such a slow program on my machine that I just won't use it, there's a lag when I type anything at all! It also doesn't happen in Firefox. Maybe I'll just have to stop using chrome on this computer.
2. When I highlight text by holding shift and using the arrow keys, it replaces as expected, but when I use 3 fingers to highlight it does the awful backwards inside out typing.
I just checked mine, and it still happens if I highlight left to right or right to left, but if I wait a moment before I start typing after highlighting, it's fine. This also constantly impacts my gmail composition.
If I highlight using anything other than three fingers (shift + arrow keys, or holding shift and then clicking at the other end of the section I want to highlight), it also overwrites text correctly. But three finger highlighting exists for a reason, it's convenient! I'd like to use it.
This was still happening to me and I've just been dealing with it for months. I just changed my keyboard input to US international and it's stopped happening. Hopefully this is a persistent fix!!! Fingers crossed, but wanted to share.
