Ipad, Ethernet and PoE

Hi Folks,

is it possible to connect the ipad (or ipad2) to an ethernet? and to charge it with PoE? Is there a device to place it on a wall? is there a Voip App?

We want to use it as a steering center for our intellgent home without WLAN. I just wonder wether a set of connectors: ethernet to USB, USB to 30-Pins will work for (a) charging and (b) the connection.

Best Christian

pretty sure that you can't charge it with anything but usb or the ac charger

pretty sure you cant get the usb adaptor to work with anything but cameras

pretty sure there is no way you can get it to work with cabled ethernet apart from connecting

a wifi hotspot to the wired ethernet and connect to ipad with that

there are piles of voip apps in app store

so don't think it will ever be able to give you want you want

even if it had an usb port then an usb port is just connector to use a connected usb

device a driver is required with computers a driver could be build into the operating system or downloaded and installed by you

but apple don't have 3th party drivers for ios devices and only support the mass storage usb driver that cameras use

You can use an Apple Airport Express. It is very small and easy to take with you. It is cabable of having profiles. Create and configure seperate profile for travel.

Then when you travel to a hotel room for example that only has a eternet cable and no wifi, you would plug in the Airport Express and attached the hotel ethernet adaptor to it. You would then have a wifi network your Ipad could use.

...and to charge it with PoE?...

The others have given suggestions for ethernet->Wi-Fi to network connect the iPad, so I will address PoE.  There are adapters to convert PoE's (nominal) 48vdc to 12vdc or 5vdc.  This one from D-Link appears to supply enough power (2.5A@5vdc, which is more than the 2A supplied by the iPad AC adapter) but you still would need to make a adapter to convert the round coaxial connector to a USB connector.  (Or cut the USB connector of an existing iPad 30-pin cable.)  For the price, one could make their own adapter.  (Not that much electronics knowledge needed, but some may find that too intimidating.)  I haven't looked extensively for other PoE adapters so I do not know if someone makes a specific PoE->USB adapter.

Hi Christian,

Can't help you with mount or VOIP, but there's an Ethernet Gigabit POE adaptor which has just been released by Redpark. It's available in the USA here, or Australia here, or EU here

Hope this is of some help to you.

Ah! Well spotted
