Mac Mail Crashes Printing Multiple Messages

I'm having a problem with the Mac Mail app, where it more often than not crashes when printing multiple messages.

I can never tell if it's going to print or crash. When it crashes, the Mail window closes immediately after clicking the Print button in the Print dialog box, and the crash report appears after some varying amount of time from a few seconds to up to a minute. I've tried different printers, an HP OfficeJet and an HP LaserJet, with the same effect.

I'm running version 10.2 (3259) of Mail on Sierra V10.12.3, but it's been doing this intermittently for several macOS versions, but seems to have gotten worse lately.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Marty

Hi martyg52,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

I see that you are having an issue with the Mail app crashing when printing multiple messages. It looks like you've done some good troubleshooting by trying to print from multiple devices. I have something else for you to try.

First, I recommend testing this issue in safe mode. Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening.

macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode

If you don't notice the issue in safe mode, I suggest taking a look at the login items that load when you log into your Mac. Try to locate any conflicts that could be causing this issue.

macOS Sierra: Open items automatically when you log in

Let me know if this helps, or if you have any additional questions about this issue.

All the best.

This was not helpful. Anytime I select 3 or more messages and try to print (either daisy P shortcut or via the menu) Mail quits. Didn't have this problem until I upgraded to Sierra today.

My iMac has been doing this since Sierra. My mail will crash occasionally with printing even 1 mail, though the printing job finishes without problem. I have been told that it is my Brother printer in that it never happens with my HP.

My printer is an Epson. After the problem started I updated the drivers for my printer and the problem persists. I have no trouble printing from any other application, just Mail.

Same here, just mail, other applications are fine.

Shame on Apple for knowing about this issue for over SIX MONTHS (when I first contacted them) and doing NOTHING ABOUT it. In spite of the fact that they've released Sierra updates in that time.

After 36 years of being an Apple customer, I'm deeply disappointed and displeased with Apple.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

I forgot to ask: can you do a print to PDF without crashing?

No, you can't even get that far. As soon as you select Print, from the menu or using keyboard shortcut, Mail crashes. File > Export as PDF works, but that puts each email into its own PDF document rather than grouping them into a single document as it does when you select Print > PDF > Save as PDF. For me, the whole point of selecting the multiple mail messages is to combine them into 1 PDF.

I've already done this months ago

Correct. The issue only occurs when selecting MULTIPLE EMAILS IN THE MAIL PROGRAM AND ATTEMPTING TO PRINT THEM.

This issue began with the Sierra upgrade.

I can select two emails to print together

Let me try this again as most of my reply got cut off. I can select two emails to print together and it will generally work. If I select three or more emails to print together it will always, always crash.
