Change generic favicons

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra 10.12.6, Safari 10.1.2

 

Why do some of my favorites replicate the app's icon and others are generic letters?

How can the generic ones be changed? (e.g. make Google Drive favicon displayScreen Shot 2017-09-16 at 10.42.17 AM.png?
