MacBook Pro 2012 HD Failure? Giving wrong Disk ...

Hi all, my mid 2012 Mac took a turn for the worst a couple of days ago, maybe it could be from the recent update in Sierra? I was skirting around max capacity of the 750gb HDD and then while I was downloading an app, which was around 4 gigs worth and having 20 gigs remaining, the my MBP crashed and had a kernel panic for about 5 restarts. When it finally get running, the boot up was so slow. Using activity monitor it turns out the HDD would start and stop, from 5Mb/s to 0 and repeat every dozen seconds or so. When I checked the Disk utility it said I had 150 gigs available! How is that possible?!  I began to delete at least 200 gigs of files and still the HDD stutters. Is there anything that could remedy the situation? So far HDD is not making any strange noises. Hoping it's not the end, even though I have a backup available. Thanks ahead of time!

Your drive is likely failing.

In addition, you should always have some 10-15% free space on any drive, and especially if it is the system drive. Your OS is permanently using this drive and needs some space in it.

Consider replacing it with an SSD. It will be the best upgrade you'll ever have. Like a totally new mac.
