Calendar invites

HI,

I have just started to get invites from what looks like China which would place the entries in on every day. The first time they added them to my work calendar which I deleted. i did not want to send a decline as I was worried they would get further information from this. This morning it happened again but in a folder I was using so I was forced to decline it. Does anyone know how to stop this? The only idea I have subsequently had is to use a custom folder and delete all the standard ones....thanks.

Hi Belinda,

Are you receiving these invites by email? If so I'd recommend taking a look at Identifying fraudulent "phishing" email - Apple Support

You can also adjust mail settings by following the steps in the article below.

Mail for Mac: Reduce junk mail in your inbox

Let us know if this helps.

HI,

thanks for replying. Unfortunately I am not getting these by email. It is like they are sharing my calendar - I just get the notification in the calendar inbox.

Thanks,

Belinda

Hi Belinda,

In that case I'd recommend changing your Apple ID password and taking a look at setting up 2-factor authentication for added security on your account. See Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

Once you've done that, review what devices are connected to your Apple ID and remove any you don't recognise by following the steps at: iCloud: Manage your devices and Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in - Apple Support

I hope this helps.

HI,

Thanks for the advice. I will take a look and let you know.

HI,

weirdly enought last last night I was just about to let you know that the password reset did not work as I got another invite but this time spin my photo sharing after I had changed it. I then changed it again and put on 2 factor verification on which I thought had worked....unfortunately last night I had a reminder placed in by them On my iPhone! Any more suggestions on how to stop this? In amongst the Chinese test was a 'website' of 49700700.com if that gives any clues to the source.

Thanks

Thanks for catching and reporting the internet address. It appears to be a Phishing attempt from a Singapore on-line gambling business. There have been other recent reports, I'm going to report this to the hosts and hopefully the word will spread.

HI,

THanks for coming back to me - it's very helpful. A few questions:

1. Can I also report this to help get the site blacklisted? If so, how?

2. Is there any way I can do anything to reduce this until they are blocked?

3. Is there any way I can delete the invite from my reminders as I have tried all the deletion options without success?

Thanks,

B

You're welcome.

1. Even though it's not email it's still phishing. RJTUK already gave you one link to report it and I'll add another. Be sure to mention it's coming through the calendar invites, I'd even give them a link to this thread.

2. Don't know, this is a brand new.

3. I never had a calendar invite so I can't help you there either, sorry.

I think we're just at the beginning of this problem. If I hear anything more I'll be back with an update for you.

Until I can figure out how this might be done with FWDing the invite from withing Calendar, lets treat the displayed Calendar invite message as if it were an iMessage/SMS/MMS message

==

Email Apple to report spam or junk

If you don't have iOS 8.3 or later, you can send an email to reportphishing@apple.com - AND - imessage.spam@apple.com with this information:

To report SMS and MMS messages, contact your carrier.

== Block phone numbers and contacts or filter messages on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch - Apple Support

HI guys,

thanks very much for all the information. I will report it and hopefully it will get nipped in the bud before this spreads too far,

B

I am unsure as to the effectiveness of any reporting efforts. Since this is a "new tactic" by the nefarious folk, it may take a while

This follows a strategy using iMessage.

In short, what happened is:

  • that some email account service (Yahoo most notably) was hacked for a long list of email addresses and passwords.
  • these were sold on the Dark Web to Chinese SPAMmers - not the whole thing but like "100,000 valid credentials for $100" or somesuch
  • the SPAMmers then "rolled the dice" that some good majority of these credentials were Apple users
  • they were able to "login from a new device" - triggering emails from Apple to the legit users
  • if those users did not see the red flag AND Change their Password, the SPAMmers were then free to exploit iMessage as if they were that user

It is clear that the Calendar invites are a new tactic based on these compromised credentials

If you have not already - Change your Apple ID password and any other credentialed sites that use the same password

Here's another article CCC found that might help. Read it all the way through to the comments for additional ideas.

HI,

thanks for the info.. I think you are right in that my mistake was to decline an invite so they knew there was a person at the other end. I will change my iCloud ID if it continues as changing my passwords (including yahoo) hasn't worked.

cheers,

Belinda

Thanks for this article - like the work around for the calendar invites. That confirms I definitely shouldn't have declined anything but at the time I couldn't find any other way of getting rid of it. Hey ho - you live and learn

thanks all,

Belinda
