Time machine with Netgear AC4000

Am trying to connect Time Machine to access external drive connected to Netgear Nighthawk AC4000.  Says

drive not acceptable.  Has anyone successfully made this connection?

Are you following all the steps?

Make sure you have formatted the drive Mac OS extended journaled as well as GUID partitioned.

If not it won't show up. Also you need to manually mount the partition before you can see it in TM.
