I keep getting the pinwheel of death

I was given an older imac from 2008.  I just completed the system download using the two apple dvds.  whenever I turn on the computer and try to click on anything, literally anything, I get the pinwheel of death.  I have no idea why it is running so slow because there is nothing saved on the computer.

Likely due to failing hardware, on a computer that old my first guess would be the HD. Not really worth anything, you may want to consider turning it in to your local computer recycler.
