Bizarre graphics glitch and freezing

Hi everybody. I have a iMac 12,2 running macOS 10.12.6. I've been having an issue since I installed El Capitan, where a bunch of multicolored squares will cover the screen, some will kind of blink and others will just sit there. Sometimes if I drag a window over the affected area, it will go away.

It used to just be an annoyance, but recently, this glitching will be followed up by a frozen screen. The catch is that I can still control the mouse cursor over the screen and there is clearly disk access and process occurring behind the frozen screen.

I hope somebody can help because this is happening a few times a week and often a few times a day.

You've more than likely got a failing gpu. The only way to know for sure is to make an appointment at the nearest Apple Store or AASP and have it properly diagnosed.
