A slow Mac can be caused by many different issues, some hardware some software. Later I'm going to suggest reading a troubleshooting article and begin your own troubleshooting with the instructions provided. However before you do one issue that is common is related to the computer not having enough FREE RAM. In general if your system has 500MB of FREE RAM or more it should be OK. You can easily check by running Activity Monitor (Applications - Utility - Activity Monitor), click the System Memory tab and you will see something like:

If you determine your system needs more RAM then I'd recommend Crucial or www. macsales.com (OWC), I tend to like OWC because they specialize in Macs, have great support, have how-to videos' and they're prices are very competitive. Crucial is also very good however they just don't have the same level of support.
