Why is iTunes duplicating my songs on its own?

I imported an album (11 songs) as I normally do and the import behaved as it was supposed to.  About ten minutes later, I notice iTunes is duplicating songs that are already in my iTunes on its own!  How do I prevent this from happening again and is there a way to delete the duplicates other than going through my library and deleting them one by one?

Thankfully, I caught it before it duplicated the entire library.  It's bad enough that I now have to delete about 500 songs!

I don't know if anybody knows the answer to this because I know of no way iTunes would duplicate them on its own, nor have I ever heard of this before. Duplicates, yes, many times, but on its own, dynamically, no. Is it duplicating the media files too, or just the entries? At what rate is it duplicating them (sit back and don't touch anything except keep an eye on the total library track count as it clocks upward).

You don't happen to have Match too, or some other extraneous factor that might contribute to resolving this conundrum?

I seemed to be only duplicating everything in my music folder, audio & video files.  I told it to stop when I realized what it was doing but about 500 songs and videos had already been duplicated.  I have nearly 9,000 audio and video files in my library and didn't wish to have duplicates of them taking up space on my hard drive.  I've never heard of this happening and have never had it happen before.  It physically duplicated the actual files.  When you look in the folders that the files are in there is the original file and a duplicate with a 1 after it.

At what rate was it duplicating ... it was going at a normal rate like when you put any new songs into iTunes.  It duplicated those 500 or so songs in roughly 10 minutes, maybe less I'd estimate.

No, I don't have Match or anything cloud based.  I don't use an iPhone or iPad.  The only thing I ever connect to my iTunes is my iPod and it hasn't been connected to my computer in at least 2 weeks.

The only thing that was hooked up to my system at the time is my external hard drive that works in conjunction with Time Machine and I didn't touch that in any way.

I actually wasn't even physically using my system when it started duplicating.  I imported those 11 songs and moved to my PC and saw out of the corner of my eye that iTunes was doing something so stopped what I was doing to see what was going on.  So, I wasn't even touching the mouse or keyboard at the time and I hadn't told iTunes to play anything before moving to use my other system.

Did you ever get an answer on this? I just had the same thing happen.

I was having problems with my ipod, to the point that I decided to restore it and re-load everything back on. When I did that, I noticed this exact same problem - songs were being duplicated automatically. I loaded the songs on in sections to keep out some stuff from my library, and noticed as I was selecting albums that many of the tracks on the albums were repeated.

I have a little over 10,000 songs on my ipod, and more than 2,000 of them duplicated while I was re-loading. More than 50 songs have duplicated just in the time that it has taken me to read the three messages above, and type this one. They are duplicating at the rate of one ever 5 or 10 seconds - sometimes it's 5 seconds, sometimes it's 10.

How can I get this to stop?

Oh, and I don't have match or anything else like that. Don't have an iphone or ipad.

I always have to re-delete duplicates. Apple has known about this problem for years and still fails to do anything about it. Quite frustrating. When I need to re-delete I often end up with less that half of the origional album/CD, etc.I really with Apple would do something about this ongoing problem with its software.

So what you have to do is go to settings, general, usage, music, edit, delete, done, and then re-sync your iPod.... This fixed my problem easily.

What a piece of crap. I am done with Apple. Steve Jobs dies and it all falls to ****. I do know this has been around but ***, I am sure its renaming because I just deleted the folder and once again, I can only assume their development is now overseas and the manager hasn't a clue. Unbelievable
