This is a sudden twist: When booting up, I enter my password for the computer (Sierra fully updated), and instead of finishing the boot, I'm getting both the spinning gear AND the beachball. What's causing this? Do I have to do a hard shut-down and try again? I have an external drive attached so if I do that I'll get the improperly ejected warning, and since it's my wife's external (she's been using my computer) I don't want to risk that. And an associated problem is that the hard drive refuses to eject when dragged to the trash or using the control-click command.
