how to qualify contacts for iMessage

I use an iPhone, an iPad, an iMac and a Macbook Pro. Contacts that I can message (text) from my iPhone, I cannot message from my Macbook Pro or my iPad. I do have them listed in Contacts. How do I correct this problem? Thank you.
