Very unpleasant experience with Time Machine an...
First, I was extremely help getting my New MacBook Pro.
Previous owned a MacBook Air 2012 so this is a huge upgrade for me.
I've been always using Time Machine to backup my data to a NAS (Synology as the brand).
Been used time machine to restore my MacBook Air and had no problem, at least I cannot recall any major one.
However, it is a disaster when I am trying to restore my backup to the New MacBook Pro.
I have backed up about 100GB of my data so I am expecting several hours for the restoration.
I mean it's fine.
Well, here comes several problems.
- First, it is EXTREMELY SLOW.
- I mean it is SLOW SLOW, not like a bit slow. The calculation shows it is going to take about 12 hours. I mean we are doing this through a local LAN right? Even it's is with WIFI is still via the LAN, not going through the Internet. I have NO IDEA how it can be this slow. But fine, I am going to sleep so I'll just let it run for 10 hours.
- After the restoration is done, I tried to login with my Apple ID. So it asked me to enter the 6 digit passcode that shows on my other phone. What funny is, the number key does not work on my MacBook Pro. I actually need to press the command key at the same time to enter the number key. Strange eh?
- When I entered the desktop, I was totally stunned. Like really stunned. ALL my app icon on t he Dock were big question mark, like "?". And of course, it was not responding when you click on them. And then I checked my Finder, NONE of my files were restored. OH MY OH MY, can you please tell what so what the **** have you been doing in the past 10 hours if none of the shix was restored?
- I was like fine, fuxx. I'll start it over again. Apple makes mistakes. So I started everything again. And then yes I have waited for 10 hours, been checking from time to time. Then I went out for couple hours and then when I got home. Open it open, the progress bar was like nearly finished, but then it shows something like "This file cannot be restored successfully." Then the error box came out and says Unstable network, please ensure your network blah blah. I mean this is the worst experience I've had. If you are expecting the restoration takes 10 or 20 hours, you must be doing a good resume function. It seems NOT on Time machine restoration.
OK so when I just finished complaining here. I am performing the 3rd try on my restoration.
But I know it is going to fail for another time since my failure rate was 100% (2/2) so far.
Hi confusedandi,
If you still have access to your MacBook Air, try connecting the computers together to perform data migration. Check out the following articles for guidance.

All the best.
