Printer Compatibility

My daughter and I both have Mac laptops, both new within the last year.  My husband has a 4-5 year old Toshiba laptop.  We have a 2 year old HP 8620 all in one printer.  He is the only one that can print.  Funny, but not so funny, I work from home and need to be able to print.  If I turn the printer off and then back on it prints fine, and as long as I continue to print all is good.  However, when I stop for more than a minute it tells me the printer is not connected.  Same for my daughters laptop.  I have  uninstalled, reinstalled, reset dlink wifi, just not sure what else to do.  Its horribly inconvenient to have to turn the printer off and on again every single time I have to print a document.

I have tried to research what kinds of printers play nice with Mac, but to my horror I found the HP 8620 on the list.  So that list is worthless.  I am not a super techy computer person, so if the fix requires "how to" beyond my capabilities, I will happily get someone to help me.  I just don't know what to try, or even what to request in the way of help.  They obviously are not communicating, and I'm thinking this is an Apple issue, since the "old" Toshiba prints on demand.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.
