why is iPad2 spontaneously asking to be set up ...
Last night I had to recharge my iPad2. After turning it off, later in the evening I turned it back on . The screen said HELLO <slide to set up> It was as if I had updated the operating system, which I had not done. It directed me to connect to iTunes (I don't use wifi). I haven't connected it to iTunes yet because this message was very disturbing.
I did not update the operating system (which would have required connecting to iTunes, and I haven't connected in several months).
Are there any other (inadvertent) actions on my part that would cause the iPad2 to suddenly want a new setup? (If one tap in the wrong place is all it takes to blow up an iPad2, sheesh!)
If I can't get any advice here I'll have to set up a Genius appointment at a nearby Apple Store.
Seems as if your iPad 2 has become corrupted somehow and needs to be restored as new through using the latest iTunes.
If you haven't been backing up the data on your iPad 2 to iTunes, then any important data you had on the iPad 2 is now gone and lost.
You need now to connect your iPad 2 to yiur computer and begin the restore process through iTunes.
If you have been backing up the data on your iPad 2, then when you perform the restore as new procedure, using the latest iTunes, you'll be presented with the option to restore your data from your last iPad/iTunes backup either during the restore process OR after the restore, you can reconnect your iPad to your computer and choose to restore from a backup on the second reconnection to iTunes, if you have a backup.
Good Luck to You!
Did you update from any previous version of iOS just before? Even a minor 10.3.2 to 10.3.3 update on my iGadgets brought up the Hello screen and required me to re-sign on AppleID+iCloud. Nothing was erased, removed or changed save the OS, so once credentials had been reestablished, the world returned to normality. Only other event I can think of is some joker doing a Settings / General / Reset / Erase All Content and Settings, but you usually have to have the lock code and AppleID password to do that so it isn't a tap&boom sort of thing.
Hope you have a backup, should the worse come to pass.
