Macbook Pro with Sierra freezes then restarts

I usually turn the screen off with a Ctrl-Shift-Eject.

When I came back a couple hours later, the the cursor was at first unresponsive, then turned into a spinning wheel of death, then that froze, then the screen turned briefly black with some white dashes, and then I suddenly got a login screen. When I logged in, Chrome said it had not shut down correctly, and other apps seemed to indicate the same.

I did have a dual monitor attached which I often don't... but usually it's worked fine. This has never happened before.

Any idea what the problem is or how I can find out?
