My iPhone was in my car, but my Watch was still...

So, the other day I'm at work and needed to use my iPhone, but couldn't find it. I never move it from my desk so I was confused where it might be. My Watch had been receiving notifications, texts, showing emails, etc all day and did not show the red "disconnected" icon, so I assumed it was still near me. I tried pinging it, but didn't hear anything, which confused me even more. I took the elevator down stairs (we're on the 9th floor), and I noticed my watch said it was disconnected from the iPhone, so, I assumed my phone was in the office. After a good hour of trying to figure out what was going on, I went to my car, which is across the street on the 5th floor of a parking garage and saw my phone in my car.

 

I'm completely puzzled as to why my watch was working and saying it was connected when the phone was nowhere nearby? My assumption is that is has something to do with the wifi at work, though my phone was not in range of it, so does the watch have wifi? I'm just mind boggled how something like this happened.

 

Lastly, it is incredible frustrating that the Apple Watch doesn't notify you or give me some sort of tap that it has become disconnected with the iPhone or otherwise I would've been told it was out of range when I left my car and couldn't went back to get it. It would be a wonderfully useful feature.

 

Anyone know why the Watch continued to work as normal with my phone nowhere nearby?

Your Apple Watch had connected to your work's Wi-Fi network as a fallback.

 

The full range of features is available when Apple Watch and iPhone are connected via Bluetooth and your iPhone has access to both cellular service and the Internet (via either cellular data or Wi-Fi).

 

You don't necessarily need to have your iPhone on or immediately around you (within arm's reach, for example) for the devices to establish and maintain their Bluetooth connection. Normal Bluetooth range is around 33 feet / 10 meters (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference).

 

Whenever your watch can't connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth, it will attempt, as a fallback, to connect to a known Wi-Fi network - this being a compatible 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (some exceptions apply) that your iPhone has connected to before whilst your Apple Watch was connected to the iPhone via Bluetooth.

 

When instead connected to Wi-Fi, the watch also still offers a number of features, including receiving and sending messages via iMessage. If your carrier offers Wi-Fi Calling and it is supported on your plan and enabled on your iPhone, you can also use Apple Watch to make calls and (subject to carrier support) to send and receive SMS / text messages.

 

If your Apple Watch is unable to connect either via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, it again still offers some - although fewer - features. Features that remain available in each case are detailed here:

 

 

For the best performance from your iPhone and Apple Watch, including the most power-efficient communication between them, Apple recommends keeping both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi permanently enabled on your iPhone.
