Audible Calendar Alerts for Sierra

Is there a way to create audible alerts for calendar events? "Play sound for notifications" is checked in Notifications

preferences, but no sound is played when the alert pops up. Other notifications (new emails, etc.) do sound alerts.

Have you tried unchecking Play sound, then quit/reopen System Preferences, and check it again.
