Managing mbox files

I have a mail folder 'on my iMac', that contains many folders and sub-folders and I'd like to take these 'offline' and store them else where for the one day I may actually need them again which is probably never but I cannot bring myself to delete them.

I have found the files in library\mail\V4 so my question relates to my options. Can I simply move the folder and everything it contains elsewhere, what will Mac mail do, what happens if I reindex?

Then, can I simply move the folder back into place and expect mail to welcome it back, perhaps following a reindex.

I've tried exporting the folder from mail but that does not include the sub-folders and I'm not inclined to do them individually.

Thank you for your help
