Multiple versions of single email in Trash

While composing an outgoing email, Apple Mail program saves a new file to the trash every time I make a change.  When I search for an email in the spotlight window for 'ANY' or 'TO', it shows all of the trashed versions of email in the directory making it impossible to find the real emails.

This happens even if you uncheck the 'When searching, include search results from Trash' box in Preferences.

How do I stop this?  I've seen several posts of this nature going back several years but no responses or fixes.

HELP!

That action is being performed by your email service provider.

Aha, I see.  I have a couple of different email services and this is only seems to be happening on my AOL account!

However, Apple Mail also saves incomplete versions of emails in 'Drafts', even though I don't save them to Drafts and even after I send them.  This happens to emails from other services too, not just AOL.

It seems to me to be an easy explanation to blame it on the other party involved.  Apple should be working out these kinks with the services for us.  I'm guessing this doesn't happen with AOL and MS Outlook.
