Adding files to Dock

I was able to add a file to my dock, but I wanted the icon to have a label, and it's just a blank icon. How can I add an icon with a label to my dock? I know it can be done because I do have one icon in my dock with a label. Well, now that I look at them, most of the icons already there are easily identifiable and don't have to be memorized. I want to add an icon that clearly shows what it contains.

Right-click on the original folder to "Get Info" (or command-i), then click on the upper left icon in that window and replace it with any icon you like by copy and paste. Then drag it down to the dock to the right hand side of the divider line. Now click and hold to choose "Options" and make it a folder.

I want to add a title to the icon. I have already placed a blank icon in my dock, but I want to prepare an icon with a title and then place in in my dock.

I'm not sure you can add a title, unless it is within the image you use for the icon. Of course, when you mouse over any icon it will display the title of the folder.

Not a solution, but if you hover your curser over the folder, can you see a name?

Yes. the icon in the dock is blank, but when I hover over it, the words appear to the right. This is not really very useful. Imagine having to use ten icons like this. You wouldnt be able to sort them out with a glance, you would have to hover-read each one and, of course,  you might forget the first one by the time you got to the eighth one. I want something better. I want it all. Is there a way to do this? I have seen a few sites that offer custom icons, but I haven't yet found a way to make my own custom icons. All I need are icons with titles on them.

It can be done. Save the icon as a jpg, open in Preview and use Mark Up > Text. Lay in your type, then reduce the image size. Then copy and paste to the small icon image in "Get Info" in your folder.

Probably easier using Photoshop.

Well, it sounds good. I'll just have to learn how to "save the icon as a jpg" and to find out what "Mark Up" is. I think I can reduce the image size and copy and past, though. Wait, I just saw your last sentence. Easier with Photoshop? Well, I do know some certified dummies who use Photoshop all the time, but I've always heard that it is  very difficult to use, certainly for people who have never used it. I'm not willing to try; I'm not a masochist. I think I'll cruise through more of those "custom your icons" sites.

Hey, I just found "Mark Up" with Spotlight. I had never heard of it, but it's in my Mac. I'll give it a try. I wonder how many other things there are in my Mac that I'd never heard of.

Mark up is in Preview
