How to stop users(kids) from changing the apple...

Hi

We purchased a cart of iPads for testing in a school environment. I've set them all up and synced them... but I can't see a way to keep kids from signing out of our school apple id and signing in with their own. Is there a restriction for this?

Also a problem with iMessage. I gave the kids the iPad and within 10 minutes they were already signed into iMessage chatting away. I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with that.. but these are shared devices.

iMessage cannot be turned off in restrictions and you cannot prevent students from signing in with their own id.  You can enable restrictions so they cannot install and delete apps with their own id. These issues are important for those of us in a school environment and all you can do is make a suggestion to Apple, set local policies, and educate the students as to appropriate use.  You can try blocking iMessage in your firewall but the port used is not listed yet see: https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629

Is there any way to "hide" apps in ios?

It would be nice to hide the messages icon.

Have you looked int the iPhone Conficuration Utility?

Apple consider iMessage core, they don't give a way to prevent its use.

If you want to block it, assuming you have the Wi-Fi only version of the iPad, block TCP port 5223 on your firewall.

This will also block APNS and hence device management if you use an MDM product to manage your devices.

If you have 3G enabled devices, You are SOL as the iPad will auto routes APNS traffic via 3G to reach the apple servers.

Thanks,

Ashish

How can you enable restrictions so they cannot download apps with their own ID?
