I can no longer open MS Word file email attachm...

I used to be able to open Word files attached to emails in the Microsoft Word app on my iPad.  Something has changed.  I can now only see them in the viewer.  Same is true for Excel and PowerPoint files.  Also have the same problem on my iPhone.  I do have a valid Microsoft 365 subscription which I recently renewed.

Anyone have a solution?

What version of ios are you using?  What email client? From what app and  platform is the file sent?

IOS 9.3.1.  I'm using the iPad email app to open emails with attachments.  The problem is none of the Microsoft Apps (Word, Excel, etc.) show up as sharing options to open.  Used to work great.  Either upgrading to the newest IOS or renewing my Microsoft 365 subscription is the likely cause of this problem.  Microsoft support chat was no help - they just kept telling me to delete and re-install the Microsoft  apps, which I have done twice and still have the problem.

What app are you using to send the email? ...  Are you sending them with OS X mail?  

 

Ok, Microsoft is suspecting a file association problem.

 

Try sending from a web browser. Get a google id and send from a web browser.

 

Try getting dropbox.com.  Upload to dropbox. Install dropbox on ipad.  Distribute to ipad word via dropbox.

 

Let's see if some other office app notices the files.

Re-boot ipad.

 

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

seems like this update is forcing use of Apple apps (keynote etc) over Microsoft...which won't sit well with business users of their products.

 

ffingers crossed there is an update and soon, or I'm left with a very expensive calendar and email reader!

The problem hasn't been narrowed down enough to pinpoint the culprit.

 

How is this?  Their are other email clients.  Try Microsoft outlook. There are other ways of transferring documents than email.

Don't know the cause of this.  You or your IT folks need to find a work-around.  IT should be talking to apple about this.  The above steps will let you get a better picture of the problem.

 

There was an earlier problem in ios 8 with Microsoft Exchange and Apple mail.  You get the picture. Don't know the resolution.

 

Do they let you add apps?  If no, you need to get on IT's case & your manager case.

 

1) Well, you could try zipping the file or files.  This would prevent any corruption of the file. See the app store for an unzip.  Unzip should allow you to transfer to the application of your choice.  I haven't found a decent free unzip.

 

2) What about trying a different email app on your ipad?  See Microsoft outlook.

 

3) If the file should be found on an internal web server, you can use icab to download.

 

Corps are funnie.  They are allowing email the great source of Social Engineering attacks.  Could allow some other app for file transfer.  example secure FTP.

 

Yeah, I know a person who claimed to have gotten fired after IT won't fix his computer. He got blamed for not using the computer properly.  Being a Windows machine, probably got a virus or got hacked.  Being in a sensitive job hacking was a possibility.

I Have found that if you are using Safari as your browser you will be able to open with word.  Touch the top left of your screen and you will see an "open with" tab appear, this is where you can choose from the apps you have on your device.

Same issue.   Seems to be due to an OS upgrade although I'm not exactly sure when it started.

 

If you tap and hold down the word icon in the email, it will give you some options like "copy to word" and "copy to ipad".  It used to be a seamless process though.

Yes, this is highly annoying and needs fixing.  I found two ways around this issue:

 

1. Clunky: email your attachment to other email (gmail or other), save attachment to Dropbox.  Open Dropbox on iPad, open file and choose excel (or other application) to continue your work.  I assume this approach will break company IT rules.

 

2. Easy: with office 365, use Flow.  In Flow you can create workflows.  One easy workflow is to save all outlook attachments to OneDrive.  Simply go to OneDrive, find your attachment and then open in excel (or other application on iPad).
