itunes could not connect to this iphone because...

itunes could not connect to this iphone because an unknown error occured (0xE8000003)

 

tried uninstalling itunes and restarting reinstalling, didnt change problem.



In my case, I had just downloaded and installed the new IoS (11.0.1) successfully.  The original problem I was trying to solved was a greyed-out "Sync" menu item in iTunes.  Uninstalled, reinstalled.  Uninstalled Apple Music on the iPhone, reinstalled.



Here's what cleared it up for me.  I once again uninstalled iTunes, but then I also uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Support (which I suspect was the key), as well as Apple Application Support (x64) and Apple Software Update.  Then I reinstalled iTunes which also installed all of these other applications.  I then connected my phone to the computer. When then starting iTunes there is a dialog asking if I want to connect the phone to iTunes, and the corresponding "Trust this computer?" dialog on the phone.  After this the connection is restored.

Now I just need to find an answer to my original problem, which is the non-functional "sync" menu item in iTunes.

 

PS during the install I also shut down all of my PC security software, just as a precaution.
