It only works on the iPad Pros.

iPad Pro, 9.7", 10.5", and 12" (both first and second generation 12" ipads)

You can potentially get an older refurbished 9.7" iPad Pro at a price similar to that a current regular entry level iPad (which would not support the pencil).
