My iPad wont restart or power on.  Any tips?

My iPad wont restart or power on. Any tips?  Even after I have held down the sleep and home button.  I also plugged it into my laptop and the laptop seems to recognize it and is telling me that I need to put in the password in the iPad before it can do anything.  Thing is the iPad screen is completely black.  There must be some life in it that the computer is recognizing it.  Any help out there?  Thanks so much for any thoughts.

How long have you held down the sleep and home buttons? 20 - 30 seconds should trigger a forced reboot which may clear up your screen issues
