When do I replace vs. work on what I have?

My MacBook Pro from 2012 10.12.6 is very slow.  I've used a good amount of my 512 storage. Sometimes it's fine but often I just got the spinning colored ball. Is it time to replace or can this mac be saved? I don't do gaming or graphics, mainly internet access and Word.  Even if I get a new computer, it seems I'd need to clean this one up before I transfer data or would I have the same problems? I don't even know how to clean things up. Do I make an appt at the genius bar and they can help me?
