Apple Smart Keyboard Numeric F

I bought this 2 days ago, got it in Yesterday.

My computer is UTD.  The keyboards types ok.

The instructions included with the keyboard gives instructions

to Re-program the F keys--- WHICH DOES NOT WORK !!

example.. the F5, F6, F13-F19 are BLANK, Have no use.

SO I went to Sys Pref, Keyboard, Shortcuts to program.

I selected "App Shortcuts" hit [ + ] to add, picked the program and gave it a F-Key.

-- doesn't work.  tried different settings and NONE of the programing works.

I've rebooted.. stood up on 1 foot.. it still does not work.

I see online many folks online have had this problem for YEARS & YEARS.

This full size keyboard is pretty new on the apple site,

I'm NOT SURE how in **** it could have functions that does not work

since there's been LONG TIME knowledge of this same problem

with the smaller keyboard.

What do you mean by this:

Maybe it is just the way you are expressing yourself, but the way shortcuts work is to assign them to menu items.

For example, you cannot easily assign a function key to, say, start Safari; but you can assign it to a menu command in Safari, like, say, "Show Top Sites":

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try setting the shortcuts from there and test.  If successful reboot normally and test again.

Thanks for the fast reply.  It did not work.  I set up all the unused F-keys in Safe mode.

Then tried them in Safe mode, didn't work.

Then rebooted back normal and still didn't work.

.

I wish there was like a simple driver I could download.

( and I did look in the app store )

Try checking this checkbox in the System/Keyboard/Keyboard preference pane and see if the F key shortcuts work when you hold down the Fn key:

If it's already checked then uncheck it and test your shortcuts.

Did not work either.

All the other F-Keys changes correctly when checking / unchecking.

but not the unassigned keys.

Ahhhh  ok.

Then I'm the problem.  Oh well.

thanks for your help.

If you really want to use a function key to launch an application, you can... but it requires a little work.

You can use a Service or a Script. These are associated with menus, so you can add shortcuts to them.

Here is how to create a Service that launches Safari - let's call it "Launch Safari".

1) Open Automator, and choose "Service".

2) Add a "Run Shell Script" action like this:

3) Save it as "Launch Safari"

4) In System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts, click Services and add a shortcut:
