iMac speakers not working: icon greyed out
Hi, my iMac's speakers have been somehow blocked from usage. The icon has been greyed out. here's what I have observed:
1. I cannot use iMac built in speakers.
2. I cannot use any external speakers connected via an aux cable.
3. If I bluetooth to an external speaker, no issues.
4. Connecting via Apple TV to external speakers work.
Accessing SOUND via SYSTEM PREF leads nowhere. Only speaker choice I have is Apple TV.
I tried upgrading to the next OS. Didn't help. Currently I am using Sierra 10.12.6.
On youtube, there are a few suggestions: Cabling an aux cable and Alt-clicking to choose speakers. Does not work as my only choice continues to be Apple TV.
Help!
