macOS Excel 2011 paste image fails

When I copy a picture from any source, and try to paste it in Excel 2011, the picture, even if I left click "special paste > as picture,"  pastes an empty box with a red X and the message "the image cannot be displayed..." None of the suggestions in the box will solve the problem.

  • In the past I have always been able to do this using El Captitan
  • This happens for pictures copied and pasted from any source
  • This error only occurs in Excel - the same process for Word pastes the image just fine
  • If I were to paste the same copied image from the internet to Numbers, the image is displayed just fine but I need to use Excel due to the large files and layouts.
  • I'm running macOS Sierra 10.12.6
  • Excel version 14.7.7

I need this capability in my workflow where I capture simulation results and graphics for dissemination using cut and paste. Drag and dropping an image file from Finder works just fine. But requiring a step where a file in the system storage must be created, named, found, and dragged and dropped into Excel is not workable or acceptable.   Thank you for your help and advice
