New internal ssd, can I keep my old time machin...

Weird question, but stay with me. I had to reinstall my hd in my iMac. I've reinstalled everything, and the system and setup is largely the same, same external drives connected etc. I'm wondering if I enable my existing Time Machine drive for the new setup, will I have the old files, going back 6 months, as well as everything new?

Or do I have to wipe the Time Machine drive and start fresh?

thanks!

Hello Meetoo,

It depends. How did you reinstall the data on the new hard drive? If you used an approved method such as restoring from Time Machine or Migration Assistant, then everything should pick right up where it left off. If you used some 3rd party clone, that might work too. If you did something else, it would probably be treated as a new machine.

In any event, you wouldn't have to wipe the Time Machine drive. It might just be difficult to use because the "Space warp" interface will not be connected. You back up as many different machines as will fit on the backup drive. But at some point, you will likely run out of space and wiping the Time Machine drive might be what you need to do. But of course, that is a worst-case scenario.
