Dragging shortcuts disabled?

I can no longer drag files into the trash bin. (I'm on a MacBook Pro 2011.) When I try to drag anything to the trash, and release over the trash as usual, the item(s) just flies back to its original position. In order to delete anything, I have to open the trash bin window and insert the files that way.

I can also no longer create a folder on my desktop by dragging an icon on top of another icon. I have to manually create a folder instead of having the handy shortcut.

Both of these problems have become a nuisance, since I throw things away and create folders a lot...

Did I accidentally click some setting somewhere? I've been searching the internet all over but I haven't found a solution to the problem. Thanks muchly,
